One of the main systems in a child’s life that has a profound role to play in the wholesome development of the child is the school.

Attending school not only facilitates the academic education of children but also assists children to develop in other ways, and creates an opportunity for children to learn how people relate to one another and develop social-emotional intelligence. Sadly though, across South Africa schools are in a state of crisis and do not represent safe and creative spaces where children can optimally learn and develop.

A large number of South African children are being excluded from healthy educational opportunities. Due to unsafe environments, lack of resources, zero tolerance policies, punitive practices, teachers with low expectations, and inadequate teacher to student ratios, many children feel demotivated and unwelcome in schools which should be working to serve their needs. This crisis in schools sets the stage for what is referred to as the ‘school-to-prison pipeline’ – an identifiable path that leads to marginalisation, incarceration, and in many cases, death.

The NICRO “School is Cool” programme is designed to help schools improve their teaching and learning environments through restorative justice practices – a proactive approach to change throughout the school, based on communication, participation, respect and responsibility.
